Your first visit to a dispensary

Bring a photo ID and a way to pay. Decide what you want before you go. Ask for the out-the-door price. Buy less than you think you need.

Numbers from store menus, as of Oct 7, 8:45 PM ET, before tax

Before you go

  • Be 21 or older. Bring a valid government photo ID. No ID, no entry.
  • Pay method. Many stores take cash or debit. Credit cards are often not allowed. Check the store's page or menu first.
  • Look at the menu online. Most stores post one. Use GLASS to see what a fair price is. An eighth in Massachusetts is typically $25 before tax.
  • Check hours and order ahead. Many stores let you reserve online and pick up.

At the door

Someone checks your ID, often at a front desk, and you may wait in a lobby. Then you go to the counter and a budtender helps you.

What to ask

  • "What is the total with tax?"
  • "What is the THC on this one, and when was it tested or packaged?"
  • "I am new. What is a good low-dose option?"
  • "Is there a first-time or daily deal?" Stores run them and they are on our deals page.

How not to overbuy

  • Start with one product. An eighth lasts most people a while.
  • Edibles: 2.5 to 5 mg for a first try. Wait two hours before taking more. This is the most common first-visit mistake.
  • Carts and concentrates are very strong. Skip them until you know your tolerance.
  • The state sets a daily purchase limit and the store will enforce it.

After

  • Keep it sealed and out of reach on the way home. Do not drive after using.
  • Use it at home. Public use is not allowed in most places.
  • Keep the receipt and the package until you finish it.
